Chiang Mai in January: Weather & Travel Tips
Is January A Good Time To Visit Chiang Mai?
Chiang Mai in January isn't just a month. To me, it's a postcard come to life! Think about the clear skies, dry days, and comfortable temperatures – basically, perfect weather for outdoor adventures and ticking off all those must-see sights. Really, outside of November (the Loy Krathong month), I think January is the best time to visit Chiang Mai.
January is the sweet spot between peak season and shoulder season. You get the sunshine and ideal exploring conditions but without the shoulder-to-shoulder tourist crowds. Picture serene temple visits and exploring charming markets without feeling like you're in a human traffic jam.
Weather in Chiang Mai in January
January in Chiang Mai is a dream for outdoor explorers. Think sunshine-soaked days, with temperatures that start cool and refreshing in the mornings (around 15°C/59°F) and then climb to a comfortable warmth in the afternoon (averaging 30°C/86°F).
Bonus: the humidity takes a vacation this month, making it feel even more delightful.
This dreamy weather makes January a prime time for hitting the streets and exploring everything Chiang Mai offers. Whether you're temple-hopping, getting lost in the vibrant night markets, or embarking on an epic jungle adventure, January's weather is your best friend. On another note, evenings can get a touch cooler, especially if you're venturing outside of the city. I suggest packing a light jacket or sweater to keep the night chills.
Basically, January in Chiang Mai is like hitting the travel jackpot: perfect weather, ideal for exploring, and comfortable enough to make you want to stay forever!

Does It Rain in Chiang Mai in January?
Don't worry about packing an umbrella for your trip to Chiang Mai in January! It's a dry season, so you won't need to shield yourself from the rain. Occasionally, there might be a light sprinkle, but it's more like a playful wink from the clouds than a downpour. This means that January is the perfect time to explore the city and the surrounding areas without any rain worries. So, leave your raincoat at home, bring your walking shoes, and get ready for some sunshine-filled adventures!
Is It Hot in Chiang Mai in January?
You might heard that January is the winter or the coldest month in Chiang Mai.
Hmmm, "Coldest" might be a bit misleading for January in Chiang Mai. Think of it as a "sunshine break" compared to the rest of the year. Sure, it's the coolest month, but the midday heat can still sizzle – we're talking highs around 29°C (84°F). So, pack your sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat – this sunshine isn't messing around!
Is It Cold in Chiang Mai in January?
I don't believe that it's particularly cold in Chiang Mai during January. While the temperature may drop to around 15°C at night, it's more of a refreshing and cool atmosphere rather than a harsh cold. However, if you plan on traveling to the mountainous areas or outside of the city, it may feel a bit chillier.
Therefore, I recommend to pack a light jacket to be prepared for the temperature drop, and to enjoy the fresh air that Chiang Mai has to offer during January.
Tips For Traveling To Chiang Mai in January
January is one of the best months to visit Chiang Mai, let me give you some of my insider tips to make the most out of your trip to my most favorite city in Thailand.
What To Wear
Chiang Mai in January offers beautiful weather, perfect for packing light and breezy clothes.
- Opt for breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Light t-shirts, tank tops, or flowy blouses will keep you cool under the sunshine.
- Pack comfortable shorts, lightweight pants, or breathable skirts. Opt for quick-drying materials if you plan on doing any outdoor activities.
- Comfortable sandals, walking shoes, or breathable sneakers are ideal for exploring the city and navigating temples (which may require removing shoes).
- A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) are essential to shield yourself from the sun's rays.
- Evenings can be slightly cooler, especially outside the city or in the north. Pack a light jacket or sweater to keep you comfortable during nighttime strolls.
- Bonus: A versatile scarf can be used to cover shoulders when visiting temples, protect your neck from the sun, or add a pop of color to your outfit.
Chiang Mai's Floral Flair in January
While cherry blossoms (sakura) typically bloom in cooler springtime climates, Chiang Mai in January offers a different kind of floral magic! The city boasts a year-round tropical charm, and in January, you might encounter vibrant blooms from orchids, bougainvillea, or even other beautiful pink-flowering trees like the Pink Trumpet Tree. Parks, botanical gardens, and flower markets are fantastic places to witness these colorful displays.
If you're lucky like me, you might be able to spot some cherry blossoms in Chiang Mai in January. Due to the warmer climate, it's not a typical occurrence, but sometimes nature surprises us. I have to admit, the natural landscape with the pink color is gorgeous.
If you're hoping to catch a glimpse of these rare "Thai sakura," head to Ban Khun Chang Khian, a charming village about 30-40 minutes from the Old City. Renting a bike for a scenic ride is a great option, but Songtheows (shared taxis) are also available. Just a heads-up for those prone to car sickness!
Best Things To Do in Chiang Mai in January
Chiang Mai in January is a destination that has something for everyone. Whether you're looking for adventure, relaxation, or a cultural experience, this city has it all.
Here are some highlights in Chiang Mai:
Temple Trotting Under Clear Skies
Chiang Mai is home to a magnificent collection of temples. Each of them is a masterpiece of intricate architecture and historical significance. During January, when the skies are clear, the temples become even more captivating.
Begin your temple adventure at Wat Phra Singh, which is one of Chiang Mai's most revered temples. You will be amazed by the glistening golden chedis (stupas), intricate murals depicting Buddhist stories, and the awe-inspiring Phra Singh Buddha statue. Please dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) to show respect for this sacred site.
Take a day trip to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, which is situated on top of Doi Suthep mountain. You can either ride a scenic motorbike or take a taxi to reach there. Once you reach the peak, you'll see Wat Phra That Doi Suthep majestically perched. Climb the naga (serpent) staircase adorned with colorful mosaics, and you'll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Chiang Mai sprawling beneath you.
Adventure Awaits at Doi Inthanon National Park
Escape the bustling city life and immerse yourself in the refreshing coolness of Doi Inthanon National Park, which is home to Thailand's highest peak. You can hike through the lush jungles, which are teeming with exotic flora and fauna. There are various trails to explore, ranging from the easy Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail to the more challenging summit trek. Don't forget to take a refreshing dip at Wachirathan Waterfall, which cascades down gracefully in multiple tiers.
Night Bazaar Delights
As the sun goes down, Chiang Mai comes alive with its vibrant night markets that transform the city into a dazzling display of sights and smells. You can explore the bustling One Nimman Night Market or Sunday Night Market, which are overflowing with fresh produce, local crafts, and a never-ending array of delicious street food. You can also venture into the Night Bazaar, a labyrinth of stalls that sell handcrafted souvenirs, colorful textiles, local artwork, and electronics. Don't forget to indulge in some Pad Thai, Khao Soi, or any other culinary treasure that catches your eye.
Chiang Rai Day Trip
Chiang Mai in January is a delightful destination that offers a multitude of attractions such as temples, markets, and natural beauty. However, if you're seeking an additional layer of cultural richness and artistic intrigue, I would love to recommend a day trip to Chiang Rai.
Located just a few hours to the north, Chiang Rai provides a distinctive atmosphere that is worth exploring. You can visit historical sites such as Wat Phra Kaew, admire the stunning White Temple, or delve into the contemporary art scene at the Black House Museum.
The first time I visited Chiang Rai, it was on a day trip from Chiang Mai, and I was blown away. This trip is the reason why I kept coming back to this less-famous city in northern Thailand.
Chiang Rai in January boasts pleasant weather with cool breezes and sunshine, offering a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. You can enjoy the laid-back atmosphere or take a trip to viewpoints like Doi Mae Salong to witness breathtaking mountain vistas.
Chiang Rai is conveniently located near Chiang Mai, making it an ideal option for a comfortable day trip. You can choose between convenient minivan tours or a more adventurous motorbike ride (while prioritizing safety, of course!). Adding a Chiang Rai adventure to your January itinerary will deepen your exploration of Thailand's diverse northern culture.
Take The Famous Mea Hong Son Loop
January offers wonderful weather conditions in Chiang Mai, making it an ideal time to discover the city and its surroundings. For those looking for a more exciting and scenic adventure outside the city, I highly recommend taking a short trip to the Mae Hong Son Loop.
As someone who has traversed both the Mea Hong Son loop in Thailand and the Ha Giang Loop in Vietnam, I can confidently say that Mae Hong Son is slightly easier to navigate due to its better-maintained roads. However, if you are a novice rider, I would not recommend attempting this route, as it requires advanced riding skills due to the winding and steep roads.
If you are still keen on visiting Mae Hong Son, there is an alternative option to using a bus to reach some of the main cities, such as Pai and Ban Rak Thai.
